Heat exhaustion and heat stroke result when the body is overwhelmed by heat . As the heat increases, body temperature and the heart rate rise painlessly. An increase in body temperature of two degrees Fahrenheit can affect mental functioning. A five degree Fahrenheit increase can result in serious illness or death. During hot weather, heat illness may be an underlying cause of other types of injuries, such as heart attacks, falls and equipment accidents. The most serious heat related illness is heat stroke. The symptoms are confusion, irrational behavior, convulsions, coma, and death. While over 20% of heat stroke victims die regardless of health or age, children seem to be more susceptible to heat strain than adults. In some cases, the side effects of heat stroke are heat sensitivity and varying degrees of brain and kidney damage. CDC Source: In terms of clinical burden on the society and number of deaths occurring due to heat illness, hyperthermic brain injury is the third largest killer in the World after the cardiovascular and traumatic insults to the central nervous system (CNS). In spite of the seriousness of this problem, studies regarding effects of heat on the CNS are largely ignored. Source: Indian Journal of Medical Research, May 2005, H.S. Sharma, University Hospital, Uppsala University, Sweden. BIKERS USA has not yet been able to find a reputable, published study related to Heat Stress and Motorcycle Helmets but suggests that you think twice before putting that helmet on you and children in hot weather. You know to never lock your children or pets in locked cars with windows rolled up. Similarly, helmets prevent heat from dissipating. The reduced heat dissipation caused by helmets is especially felt while at a stop and in slow moving traffic. Update 5/1/07 - Email to CDC: I have searched the CDC site and have found very good articles about HEAT STRESS. However, I cannot find any reference to HEAT STRESS and MOTORCYCLE HELMETS. HEAT STRESS is a very serious danger. It is the experience of many motorcyclists, that helmets increase HEAT STRESS, because the helmets prevent/reduce heat dissipation. In the absence of an advisory by the CDC, we are issuing our own advisory. Please see http://bikersmag.com/documents/heatstress.pdf . Please conduct a study and send comments to the email provided. Thank you. See Heat Stress and Motorcycle Helmets full pdf document. | | | | Good News! SMOKEOUT RALLY IS ON AGAIN!SAME TIME, SAME PLACE, WITH BEER! | | | URGENT: NASTY Drug Alert - Super Heroin is Killer ! Bikers USA There are always occasional myths about hot doses of heroin hitting the streets, but this report may be true. Emergency rooms are reporting that an artificially produced super strong heroin has hit the streets. It is 100 times are strong as morphine. It immediately attacks the central nervous system and users are dropping like flys. Illegal Immigrants - The editor of Bikers USA has been spammed, almost daily, by one particular group wanting to post events opposed to illegal immigration. One day, I received 52 emails from this group! I suggest that is not any way to influence me to help you. We are also opposed to illegal immigrants trespassing to work for slave wages to make some fat cats richer. We are opposed to amnesty and eventual citizenship for people who break our laws by crossing our borders illegally. However, we are very opposed to bashing and hostilities against these impoverished people. If you want to bash someone or be hostile toward someone, aim your anger at the government which did almost nothing to secure our borders since 9/11, and aim your hostility toward employers who seek illegal immigrant labor so they don’t have to provide basic benefits and a living wage. 1. Secure the borders. 2. Then, and only then, can you begin enforcement of immigration laws. 3. Make severe penalties for those who hire illegal immigrants, and enforce them. 4. Since English is our national language, save tax dollars by stopping government publication of welfare and food stamp documents in Spanish. Citizenship requires understanding English, so why is it that they ask if anyone needs a Spanish interpreter when taking the citizenship oath? Sturgis Rally Boycott threats in response to outlawing of abortions in South Dakota. See Sturgis Rally Boycott. | Seattle Woman on 20,000 mile motorcycle ride June 16, 2006 Editor of Bikers USA According to her web site and blog, Robin Mahaffey, age 54, departed Seattle on June 10, 2006, on a voyage that will last about 3 months, returning back to Seattle in October, and will cover 20,000 miles. The latest word is that she has ridden about 900 miles. At this point, little else is known about where she is, what routes she is taking, where she plans to visit. We do know that if the ride is able to produce some proceeds, she plans to help Habitat for Humanity for New Orleans and Grounds for Health. Like many of us, Robin has seen more than her share of challenges, and heartbreaks, with deaths in the family and problems her son is having. She is hoping to meet with women throughout the country to tell them, if she can do this, they can overcome their own fears and accomplish anything. Bikers USA will continue to attempt contact with anyone who might know her exact route and stops. What kind of accomodations does she have at night? For those of us who would love to take a similar ride but are very short on funds, we’d love to know what the budget is for a 20,000 mile trip? What kind of people is she meeting along the way? Is she getting to see any beautiful scenery? That’s the kind of stuff I want to know, but mostly what I want to know is if she plans on riding anywhere near my town so I can meet her. So far, the internet, including her own web site and those of her major sponsors really do not tell us very much more than what I’ve already told you, leaving people like you and me who want to know more very disappointed. Have faith. We’ll eventually find out more. As of June 16, 2006, a search on Google for the term - “Robin Mahaffey” Seattle - yields only 53 results. As her adventure of a lifetime continues, we’ll keep an eye on this and find out if the word begins to spread. I suspect it will escalate quickly. This should make it 54! May the wind be at your back, Robin, and may you find excellent weather, interesting stories to tell, wonderful memories, and may the people you encounter give you as much encouragement as you give to them. | Myrtle Beach Mayor does NOT Amuse Motorcyclists Mayor comment about being tempted to use his car as a weapon gets Myrtle Beach in trouble again. Mayor Mark McBride said he wanted to ban explicit T-shirts from sale and from being worn in public, saying his young children shouldn't be exposed to a T-shirt he saw recently being worn on the public street. "It was very tempting to kind of nudge the guy on the bike [with my car]," McBride said. Myrtle Beach Mayor is candidate for reelection this year. During a meeting with motorcyclists, McBride still thinks he has a right to nudge a motorcycle with his car. |

 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some motorcycle events, particularly in the Gulf Coast area of the USA, may have been effected by Hurricane Katrina. As always, before riding 100 miles, you might want to check with the event organizers to make sure the event is still on. BIKERS will update as we get word of any cancellations. If you were effected, my heart’s with you. I tried quickly forming a relief fund, Biker Charities, because I cannot in good conscience recommend any agency where the executives are pulling in salaries of $450,000. I will be developing Biker Charities, but it’s going to take a lot of time before it’s recognized as credible. Meanwhile, if you want to give to a charity, check it out first. Some of them are con artists. My general rule about donating is, I don’t donate if any money ends up in the pockets of someone who makes 10 or 20 times as much as I do.
